TimescaleDB vs. Amazon Timestream — Timescale is a time series database, so it’s no surprise its creators aren’t fans of Amazon’s competing Timestream. Nonetheless, the author says they went out of their way to be fair to Amazon, but still found Timestream to be lacking with tooling, throughput, latency, and more. It would be interesting to see AWS respond to this!

Amazon Unveils 'Babelfish', a SQL Server to PostgreSQL Translation Layer — When you’ve spent years building data systems on top of SQL Server or Oracle, migrating to Postgres might seem like a pipedream. AWS has unveiled Babelfish to help (eventually) – it’s designed to let Postgres work with apps built solely for SQL Server. It’s going to be open sourced in 2021 but is in preview solely for Aurora now.

SQLite 3.34.0 Released — A release of the world’s most widely used database is always a cause for celebration around here. 3.34.0 takes graph queries a step further with enhancements to recursive CTEs, the CLI gets numerous enhancements, and the full text indexer gets trigram index support.

Scaling Datastores at Slack with Vitess — So just what technology has Salesforce acquired in its $28bn purchase of Slack? Well, Slack was always a MySQL shop but in order to handle their growing scale they brought in Vitess to add horizontal scaling to MySQL. Here’s the full story of how this process occurred.

Introducing Amazon Aurora Serverless 2Aurora Serverless was Amazon's way to add the auto-scaling, 'pay as you go' serverless paradigm to a database service and it's worked reasonably well. Version '2', still in preview, promises a much more granular and flexible level of scaling.

Building a Telegram Bot with Python and FaunaFauna is a ‘serverless database’ in the sense that you don’t have to worry about ops or scaling at all, it’s an easy to use cloud API (and you use GraphQL or Fauna’s own query language to query your data).

And in Fauna related news, they've introduced new capabilities for collaboration, third-party authentication (such as with Okta or Auth0), and real-time database streaming.
